"There is nothing I dread so much, as a division of the Republic into two great Parties, each arranged under its Leader, and concerting measures in opposition to each other. This, in my humble apprehension is to be dreaded as the greatest political Evil, under our Constitution."
- John Adams
Our Founding Fathers knew that the greatest danger to the Republic would be factions competing to govern the country by a slim majority, sacrificing the rights of the small minority out of power. Here's a quote from James Madison in Federalist #10 and #51 that expresses this fear:
"When a majority is included in a faction, the form of popular government ... enables it to sacrifice to its ruling passion or interest both the public good and the rights of other citizens. To secure the public good and private rights against the danger of such a faction, and at the same time to preserve the spirit and the form of popular government, is then the great object to which our inquiries are directed. In a free government the security for civil rights must be the same as that for religious rights. It consists in the one case in the multiplicity of interests, and in the other in the multiplicity of sects. The degree of security in both cases will depend on the number of interests and sects."
This is exactly the failure we see today. Democrats would sooner see the United States ruined than watch it become MAGA, and Republicans would rather see the United States ruined than watch it become Woke. In this environment of toxic partisanship, ideology ruins effective governance.
There are too many perspectives for two parties to represent all of us. Furthermore, we need more voices at the table, so competition can cultivate the best solutions. Multiparty democracy will get us there.
My name is Robert Moesinger. I'm running as an independent for a seat in the US House of Representatives from the Utah 2nd Congressional District (mostly the former 1st District).
